Default Lost header/footer for default normal document v2003

Whenever I open a new document in Word 2003, the page defaults to the cursor
at the uppermost edge of the page. I had it set to default at 1" header and
footer. I tried to reset these defaults but it's not working for me. How do
I reset the default settings for new documents? Thanks.
