Default Word 2003: Large manuscript

Imagine a large manuscript divided into chapters i.e. a book, that contains
snippets of code + results, e.g. say, code executed in the Immediate Window.

Is there a way of marking such code + results pasted into the manuscript,
say in the margin? I know about captions but am looking for something less
unwieldy, preferably something that shows the chapter number, the heading
number + a sequence number. (remember, shown in the margin).

The idea is to refer to the code snippets in the manuscript by name in a
separate document. The code in the manuscript relates to one language and the
separate document refers to the code by name and provides translation into
another language.

Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

Thanks.

See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/wordfaqs/MarginalText.htm, especially the
section "True marginal text" about using frames as part of styles.
