Default how do you store addresses for mailing labels or envelopes?

I'm a Wordperfect user being forced to use this what I consider a useless
word processor. I can easily store and retrieve addresses for envelopes or
labels in WordPerfect. That doesn't seem to be possible with Word, is it?

Gee, you're going to make friends in here, aren't you?

Use Excel and do a mail merge.

Word can use the Outlook Contacts list as an address book, accessible via
the Address Book icon in Tools | Letters and Mailings | Envelopes and
Labels, but only, I think, if you have Outlook selected as your default mail
client (which I consider a substantial drawback).
