Default How do I globally and entirely turn-off autoformating in styles

Office 2003-Pro Word
I have been unable to turn-off automatic formatting in styles by modifying
the template for styles. The check box provided does not cut it!
I would like to turn this feature off entirely and gobally. In fact, I find
this feature so frustrating that I have gone back to using Word 97.

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...eformatted.htm. But
note that some styles are set to update automatically by default, and this
is really helpful. Notable among these are the TOC styles.
