Default Word file size doubles when application ended

I have a word document in which unintentionally I exectuted a command which
began to reformat the entire document. The process was taking so long that I
decided to cut my losses and terminate the programme before the task ended.
After doing this 3 times I realized that the document file size had
quadrupled.
Will I be able to reduce the file size back to what it should be and how?

I would copy everything in the document EXCEPT the last paragraph mark to a
new blank documen and save it. That will bring your file size back down.

To implement finalword's suggestion, you must first turn on visiblity of
paragraph marks.
Tools -- Options -- View, check Paragraph marks in the Formatting marks
section
