Default Word 2003 is saving files onto Notepad

Whenever I type a document up on Word 2003 and save it to my desktop (or
anywhere else for that matter), when I try to reopen the document, it opens
up in Notepad. How did I stop this from happening? Thanks!!

The file associations for Word have become screwed up.
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm should fix it. If
not, from Windows Explorer, right click the document and select Open With
.... Choose Word (or winword.exe) and check the box for 'always open with
this application'.
