Default Doing column addition in a WORD text document

I have many columns of numbers in WORD text documents [NOT in tables].

In the old WORD for DOS I could add columns of numbers in text
documents.

How do I do it in WORD from Office 97 and Win 98?

Can I do so without having to convert the text documents to
tables?

Thank you.

Eugene

Yeah, I don't use it often, but when I need it, it is very handy.
