Default Update page numbers only in a table of contents

In Word 2003, when I want to update my table of contents, I do not have the
option to update pages only. So it takes away my outline numbering for each
paragraph. How do I fix this?

Hmm, the default way of handling TOC layout is adjusting the
corresponding TOC styles. Direct formatting to any field should be
avoided if possible.
