Default My superscripts/subscripts are light grey

Recently, all the subscripts/superscripts in my existing documents have gone
from the regular font to a light gret font. They seem to print OK, but it is
very hard to read the numbers on the screen because they are so pale. The
numbers are not part of a numbered list, but are typed in. When typing
superscripts/subscripts in a NEW document, they appear fine.
