Default page and TOC numbering

I am working in W97 and am stumped on a solution. I need to get the chapter
number to appear in the footer to the left of the page #. It also needs to
appear in the TOC. However, the heading styles defined in the document are
not the default Word headings 1-9?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

For chapter/page numbering to work you have to use the buit-in heading
styles (see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/chapternumber.htm). You can
either manually apply these styles, or use the Find and Replace dialog box
to replace the current styles (or direct formatting).

You are welcome.

Also, don't forget that you can change the built-in headings to have the
desired formatting (so being forced to use them isn't really a limitation,
although it requires some extra work in this case).

In my case the use of changed builtin styles isn't a viable solution because
of documentation processes. But, I do appreciate your continuing to try and
help me find a way to accomplish my goal.

thanks again
