Default You should put fonts for download

Some years ago Microsoft did have the Office fonts available for
download, but they were removed from the web site. I'm not sure of the
reason, but I suspect it's because Microsoft licenses most of the
fonts from other companies rather than owning them itself.

You're entitled to a copy of the fonts if you buy Office -- that's the
legal language in the license. People who don't buy Office aren't
entitled to the fonts. Since the web site isn't set up to restrict
downloads only to licensed users, Microsoft couldn't ensure that the
license terms were being obeyed.

Some Windows Update downloads now require "Genuine Windows"
validation. A scheme like that might someday be used to limit who can
download Office files, in which case the font downloads might return.
As the old saying goes, "Be careful what you wish for -- you might get
it."
