Answer: Word Count Excluding bracketed words
Yes, it is possible to exclude words in brackets from the word count in Microsoft Word. Here's how you can do it:
Now, when you run a word count in Microsoft Word, any words in brackets will be excluded from the count. Keep in mind that this setting will apply to all documents in Microsoft Word, not just the one you're currently working on.

In the copy, delete all the words that are bracketed, by using a wildcard replacement of an expression like \([A-Za-z ]@\) with nothing as described at http://www.gmayor.com/replace_using_wildcards.htm (but since different people use "bracket" to mean different characters, you may have to change the expression to make it work for yourself). Do a word count on the remaining text of the copy document, which you can then discard. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. |

You could also use a Replace operation to just format the bracketed words as
Hidden. When Hidden text is not displayed, it is also not counted. -- Suzanne S. While it is not possible to exclude what’s in brackets and quotes from the word-count in Microsoft Word or Pages you can use a web tool designed to do it for you, called Excludify: http://www.excludify.com You simply upload your .docx / .doc file or copy & paste your text into the textbox. Scroll down to see all the excluded brackets & quotes. Include the ones that are actually part of the word-count back in. Your ‘real’ word count will appear in the header. Excludify is pretty neat, and I’ve been using it constantly to check my ‘real’ word count when I wrote my EE. I even upgraded to pro so it would remember what I wanted in-and what outside my word-count each time I came back to re-count the essay. |
