Default Can you use ELSE IF in fields?

I have an issue where my merge field can be 12 different values and I would
like to insert different text depending on which one of the 12 it is. I can
not seem to get it to work by nesting the IF's or find anything on the
Internet.

Thanks for the responses!

Simply use multiple IF fields (not necessarily nested).
