I have dozens of operation manuals that I would like to display on our
intranet. I do not want to have to resave each document as an HTML and then
re-format into my Intranet as needed as the manuals are evolving. I would
also like to improve document navigation.
Is there a way to reference the text (only) within a Word document from a
web page using Word tags or bookmarks or (whatever)?

If I am understanding you correctly you want to reference a Word document
from your company intranet.

You can link directly to the Word document and IE will open Word with the
document. As far as I know, it is not possible to link to a location in the
Word document from a web page.

I would save the file as HTML out of Word and place that file on the
intranet and link to that file. Saving a file to it's binary form (.DOC) and
then to HTML is only one extra step.

I am not a big fan of either Word files or PDF files being linked to an
intranet. The files are not searchable if that is what is needed. The user is
then dependent on on how well the navigation is setup. It restricts the end
user.

You could also look at http://www.macromedia.com/software/robohelp/.

Thank for your reply Charles, I wish it were that simple. We are trying to
reference specific parts of the Word document. For example: If I had a
document on all the ways to make a tuna sandwich and in the document there
was a section on opening the can of tuna, I want to reference that section
directly with out the getting the document's header, etc.
Or possible do things the other way around, i.e. create several HTML docs
and pull that data together in the Word doc.
I hope I'm making sense.

Try IncludeText fields. They are fully described in the help file.

It is that simple! Put bookmarks in the Word document, refer to those. You
use Insert File to insert a link to the bookmarked portion.
