Default "non-breaking" space available??

I am typing a document where I am putting in a measurement in English units,
than the metric in parenthesis. I would like to have the space between the
number and the unit for both to be "non-breaking" -- where the number and
unit stay on the same line. Is this possible??

Thanks

Press Ctrl+Shift+spacebar to make a non-breaking space.
