headers and footers
If you've ever inserted a header in Normal.dot, there's no way to get rid of
it except to rename Normal.dot, I'm afraid. That's why we strongly advise against customizing the header or footer of Normal.dot. Note that I'm assuming you're referring to a default empty paragraph in the header as opposed to actual text (which can be removed from Normal.dot). You will get this empty paragraph if you have ever visited the header in Normal.dot and touched it in any way, including moving the tab stops. If you have changed the margins in Normal.dot and want to move the tabs, the best way to do this is by customizing the Header or Footer style, changing the tab stop location via the Tabs dialog. Or you can insert a Header or Footer paragraph in the main document body, change the tabs using the ruler, and then update the style. If you're doing this in a document vs. Normal.dot, you'll need to check the "Add to template" box in the Modify Style dialog, however. -- Suzanne S.
