Default Mail merge: Excel doc. opening encrypted in Word.

I have created a mailing list in Excel, I close it and go to Word, begin the
mail merge for labels, and the Excel doc. opens encrypted. What am I doing
wrong? I am following the directions from Help and How to.

Many thanks

Which version of Word/Excel?

Have you saved the Excel document with any password or encryption?

opens encrypted

Do you mean you just see gobbledygook when you preview, or something else?
