Default Mailmerge and number format

Hello everybody
I maintain my school marks in excel and mailmerge them. Previously it works
well. Now my problem is that the number format. If mark is 90 in excel, it
is giving me 90.0 and if it is "a"-absent it is not displaying anything.
Previously i used to get exactly what i have entered in excel (i.e, 90 or a).
Where i am fumbled. Help me pls.
the number format i selected in excel is "general" and using office XP.

With regards
Sridhar

See http://tips.pjmsn.me.uk/t0003.htm

I would try the DDE option first.
