Default copy and past tables

I have three documents with small tables and I am trying to copy and paste
just those tables into a 4th doucment. When I do this, I end up with each
table on a separate table. I have displayed formatting marks and I cannot
see any reason for this to occur. Do you have any ideas? Thanks in advance
for your help.
