Default Word 2007 Dropdown list

I inserted a dropdown list into a Word Table and the list button does not
appear

Exactly what kind of dropdown list is it? Did you use the one in the lower
left corner of the Controls group of the Developer ribbon, or did you use
the one from the Legacy Tools button in the lower right corner of the
Controls group?

The one on the lower left is a "content control", and it should display the
down arrow button whenever the cursor is in that control (but not at any
other time).

The one on the Legacy Tools button is a "form field", which requires the
document to be protected for forms -- and then the down arrow button will
appear only when the cursor is in the field.
