I'm editing a document that was sent to me as a Notepad file. It opens fine in Word, but the formatting/spacing/carriage return is off. So the text appears as this:

abdkd dkdjfi d kjdijid dkdk kdkkjfk ¶
dkjdkjf kdklsifj ksjfidi dkflslkd a;;oe e ¶
dkfjfielel akdidj dl dlid dlndlijd ld ldidldl ¶

Rather than it filling in a complete line before starting a new one.

Is there an easy way to re-format the entire document without having to manually go in and pull the lines together by using backspace or delete?

If you know how to do macros, you could do this procedure all in one click,
but here's what to do:

Put your cursor at the start of the .txt file that you've opened in Word.

Check whether paragraphs are marked off by, say, two Enters in a row. (If
they're marked off only by indents, say five spaces, then alter the
following step accordingly.)

Open Find-Replace (Ctrl-H). In the upper, Find, box, type ^p^p
(without the ), or whatever sequence of characters marks off paragraphs.

In the lower, Replace With, box, type ^l (the "end-of-line" character).

Click "Replace All."

Next, in the Find box leave just ^p , and leave the Replace With box
completely empty, and click "Replace All." (Your example below shows
that there's a space before each paragraph mark. If the paragraph mark
is directly against the last character in the line, then type one space
in the Replace With box.)

Finally, in the Find box type ^l and in the Replace With box, type
^p , and Replace All.

Hopefully you're normally set to use Smart Quotes or Curly Quotes. If
you are, then the last step is to put " in both the Find and Replace
With boxes, and then do the same with ' .
