Default Formating one word affects whole document

In editing a chapter in a textbook, when I try to format one word by
highliting or centering, the entire document follows the command.

I have checked in Tools for a possible relationship but find nothing.

The document was created several months ago.

Other chapters edited have not exibited that problem.
