Default List to multi-column table, sorted down instead of across

Word 2003

I have a long alphabetized list of words. I want to put them in a
four-column table so as not to waste space. If I "Convert from text
to table," the list ends up being alphabetized across the rows. I'd
it to be alphabetized down the first column, then continue in the
second column, and so on. Any easy way to do this?

Thanks.

Don't put them in a table, set the page layout to 4 columns instead.
