Default Convert Wordstar to Word 2007?

Is there still a file converter for Wordstar (circa 1992 -- I no longer know
the version number) to Microsoft Word (I'm using Office 2007, but I still
have computers with 2003 and 2000 installed)?

I've searched the MS Knowldege Base, which refers to a Wordstar converter
ONLY in the Office 2000 Converter Pack. This pack has been withdrawn,
however, because of "security issues." The replacement Office 2003 Converter
Pack does not appear to contain any Wordstar converter, nor does there appear
to be one for Office 2007. It would appear that Microsoft has left me high
and dry this time...

I have lots of these old Wordstar docuemnts archived on CD-ROM, one of which
I need right now. Text conversion followed by the extremely tedious
corrrection of nearly every word is not an option. Any help would be much
appreciated. -- JCW

Thumbs up Answer: Convert Wordstar to Word 2007?

Options for Converting Wordstar Documents to Microsoft Word

Hi JCW,

I understand your frustration with trying to convert your old Wordstar documents to Microsoft Word. While Microsoft no longer provides a Wordstar converter in their newer versions of Office, there are still a few options available to you.
  1. One option is to try using a third-party file converter. There are several software programs available online that can convert Wordstar files to Microsoft Word. Some popular options include FileZigZag, Zamzar, and Online-Convert. These converters are typically free to use and can be accessed through your web browser.
  2. Another option is to try opening your Wordstar documents in a text editor, such as Notepad or WordPad, and then copying and pasting the text into a new Word document. This method may require some formatting adjustments, but it can be a quick and easy way to transfer your text.
  3. If neither of these options work for you, you may want to consider reaching out to a professional data conversion service. These services specialize in converting old file formats to newer ones and can often provide a high level of accuracy and quality.

I hope this information helps you convert your Wordstar documents to Microsoft Word.

Default Convert Wordstar to Word 2007?

Meanwhile I've found a convoluted way to do this through
"http://www.wordstar.org/wordstar/pages/convert_faq.htm": Download the old
Office 95 converters from
"ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/wdsupcnv.exe", expand them by
running the EXE, and then install the one needed as instructed in the
included readme.rtf file. This converter works in both Office 2000 and
Office 2003 (but NOT in Office 2007). Once the files are converted on the
other computer, copy them over, open them, and reformat as necessary in Word
2007. Now I'll check yours out... -- JCW

OPS -- Engage brain before putting [fingers] in gear! I was ASSUMING that my
previously described solution would not work on Word 2007, since it was not
advertised to do so. I see that your file, "Wrdstr32.cnv", is identical to
the one I just installed successfully on Word 200 and Word 2003. I further
guess that you intend me to copy that file to some corresponding converters
directory for Office 2007 and then run the included REG file. Is that
correct? -- JCW

Correct - as explained on the web page from which you downloaded it - and it
does work with Word 2007. I have just tested it.
If you have used the random file name extension capability of Wordstar, you
will not be able to open the files by double clicking from Explorer, as
Windows has a much more rigid filenaming protocol. The registry patch sets
the extension to .ws

You can easily convert WordStar files to Microsoft Word by using a Perl script. One good explanation is available at http://ataridogdaze.com/tech/wordstar-convert.html
