Default Is there a way to set how many characters can be entered per line?

I am trying to type the text of a letter in Word so that I can cut & paste it
into our mainframe. Our system only allows 73 characters per line and it
does not automatically wrap the text. I've only found places where I can set
a width based on "pt" sizes, not characters.

You'll need to use a monospaced font such as Courier New and set your
margins such that only 73 characters will fit.
