Default Word 2003: Putting Chapter Numbers in TOC, but not in the document

I have a document that I've used custom styles for. I want to create a
TOC based off of them and I know how to do that, but I don't know how
to get a Chapter Number, or get something like "Chapter 1" in front of
the text that's produced in the TOC from my custom style. I, of
course, don't want the "Chapter 1" to show in my document, but only in
my TOC.

When I tried to add a TC field, I got a repeat entry in the TOC. Any
help? Thanks.
