Default Page Number and Table Grid styles just appeared...why?

What causes these style to be created? I was cleaning up all of our
templates (shared network folder) and I had never seen these two styles.
Now, a few weeks later, these styles are peppered through out my "clean"
templates. Does anyone know what creates these?

Page Number is a built-in character style that is applied when you insert a
page number.

Table Grid is a built-in Table Style and is often set as the default format
when you insert a table.

I don't know how these styles are getting into your *templates* unless you
are opening and editing the templates themselves. They are certainly likely
to crop up in documents if people take the actions above.

It's possible that the styles have always been there but you haven't seen
them before because of the settings on your Styles dialog or Styles and
Formatting task pane - for instance, if you were previously only seeing
user-defined styles. For more info see

I was actually recreating our templates to get all the styles consistant. I
started with a new, cleaned up Normal on my computer, and then opened each
template, copy/pasted the contents to a txt file to completely strip out all
the formatting, then copy pasted from teh txt file back to a new, clean Word
file which I then formatted using only my new style scheme. Some of these do
not have any tables, yet the "Table Grid" style has cropped up in them.

I just finished deleting the two new styles and in almost all of the cases
(with the Page Number only) the style was not in use. With the Table Grid
style, most of the time it was associated with tables in the file, but there
*were* a handful of files that had no tables in them (*and* no page numbers)
but DID have both the Table Grid and Page Number styles. (but it IS Word, so
it doesn't surprise me all that much
