I now have gray markings (looks like 1/2 a square) in each of the four
corners of my Word 2003 document. How do I get rid of these?

Dibo,
It might be you have Asian language support activated.
In that case go to Start - All Programs - Microsoft Office - Microsoft
Office Tools - Microsoft Office - Language settings and disable any enabled
East Asian language.
