Default Problems with columns in new word documents

All of a sudden, all new word documents are starting up with a different page
size and layout - and with three columns, instead of one. I THINK I fixed
the former by going back to default but I can't make the three columns revert
to one.

I tried the main method as well as the alternate ones and was unable to find
any normal.dot documents other than a few old ones in the recycle bin. I
have thus far been unable to determine how this happened nor how I can fix
it. Carol

Normal.dot is by default a hidden file in the folder defined at tools
options file locations user templates.
There should only be one!
