Default Why does pressing enter skip a line, and how to change it?

So in every other program, and older versions of word, you pressed enter and
it went to the next line. Now, it goes two lines down! How do you turn this
feature off, and, for those who maybe might have the in, why on earth is this
feature here? All this crap about trying to make things easier for you
really makes it a lot tougher, and really, can anyone not spare the time to
press enter once?

Thumbs up Answer: Why does pressing enter skip a line, and how to change it?

The reason why pressing enter in Microsoft Word skips a line instead of moving to the next line is because it is set to use a default paragraph style that includes extra spacing between paragraphs. This is called "paragraph spacing" and it is designed to make documents easier to read by creating more space between paragraphs.

However, if you prefer to have your paragraphs closer together, you can change the default paragraph spacing in Microsoft Word. Here's how:
  1. Open a new or existing document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Click on the "Home" tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
  3. Click on the small arrow in the bottom right corner of the "Paragraph" section.
  4. In the "Paragraph" dialog box that appears, click on the "Indents and Spacing" tab.
  5. Under "Spacing", change the "After" value to "0 pt".
  6. Click "OK" to save your changes.

Now, when you press enter in Microsoft Word, it will only move to the next line instead of skipping a line.

As for why this feature is here, it is designed to make documents easier to read by creating more space between paragraphs. However, everyone has their own preferences when it comes to formatting documents, so it's good to know that you can change this default setting to suit your needs.

Apparently you have it set for a wider paragraph spacing than what you want.
Did you look at your settings?

If you want Word to use single spacing as the default in version 2007:
On the Page Layout tab, click Paragraph.
Click the Indents and Spacing tab.
In the Spacing section, click the arrow net to the After box until the value
is 0 pt.
In the Line Spacing box, select Single.
Clear the nmber in the At box.
Click Default.
Click Yes when prompted.

Thanks Carol

I'm using a school computer and they must have set up the defaults
differently. Sometimes they aren't changeable...

Actually, MS Word 2007 ships with the default line spacing set that way and I
believe the default font is Callibri.

You should also check to make sure that the space before and after your
paragraph is set to zero, as JoAnne suggests.
