Does anyone know of a quick keyboard way to add Chinese pinyin characters
other than going via insert special characters route? I am studying Mandarin
and need to type up my notes in Pinyin and it takes ages.

You may be able to setup a Chinese keyboard in Windows, then use the
on-screen keyboard (Accessibility options) to display the key assignments.

Can you give me more information on exactly what you found that works. I
also am learning Mandarin and would like to be able to write the pinyin. I
posted a question very similar to yours just a couple of days ago and see
your interesting comment.
