Different alignment formatting for header & page number on same line
Background:
A while back I converted an 800+ page manuscript from WordPerfect to Word. Each chapter is its own document - partly by choice, partly because this is the way I created them in WP. (Eventually I will combine all the chapters into a single document after revising.) Question: I would like to redo the Headers so that all documents will look like this: [Title of Manuscript]--[Chapter #] [Page number] Is there a way to "Align Left" the Title and Chapter number, and "Align Right" the page number, all on the same line, within the same Header? I am using Word 2003. Thanks, Dave |

Dave,
Seems to me, but maybe I am misreading your question, that you should use the tabstops that are already in the header and footer, there is one in the middle (center tab) and there is one (right tab) at the end of the line. So type your Title chapter number press the tab key twice and insert your page number using the insert page number button on the header and footer toolbar. If you want you can change the position of the tabs, insert new ones and use them to your hearts content. Luc "Dave" schreef in bericht ... Yes. View - Header/Footer. Format - Tabs. Set a right-aligned tab stop at 6" or 6/5" or wherever your right margin is. OK. Then hit the tab key before inserting the page number code. -- Stan Brown, Oak Road Systems, Tompkins County, New York, USA http://OakRoadSystems.com/ "My theory was a perfectly good one. Others answered your exact question.
For dealing with 800 pages, some suggestions: When you combine, a StyleRef field will be handy to do the headers, explained he http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm From your question, I'm guessing you are not familiar with styles and templates. So when you combine, or as you prepare to combine the chapters, you might consider the approach to using Word that is introduced he So You Want to Write a Book With MS Word http://daiya.mvps.org/bookword.htm And if you are more familiar with WP than with Word, consider these links: These links might not have the answer to your specific question, but you will probably find them very useful as you switch from WordPerfect to Word. Thanks everyone. Your answers were a big help.
Daiya: Thanks for the links. I'll check them out. And you're quite right - I'm not really familiar with styles and templates. There are a lot of old WP habits I need to get rid of. Also my apologies for taking so long to reply. I was having some computer problems but everything is working okay now. Dave |
