The page setup option is greyed out under FILE in my endnotes section. Tried
everything. Still no joy. Consequently endnotes commence half way down the
pages.

Page setup is disabled while you are editing footnotes and endnotes. But
that has nothing to do with where the endnotes are positioned on the page.
What are you trying to do?

half way down them.

Did you examine the formatting of the Endnote Separator and Endnote
Continuation Separator as I suggested?

There's nothing in Page Setup that affects endnote positioning. Check that
you don't have something strange in the format of the endnote separator --

Switch to Normal view.
Select Footnotes from the View menu.
Select 'Endnote separator' from the dropdown at the head of the lower pane.

Yes, I did. No help. I'm going to try putting the endnotes at the end of
chapters instead of at the end of the book. Thanks for the interest.

To anybody: My book is so messed up with different formats I've seemed to create over the years, I'd like to, without losing the work, take the entire document into a clean slate, with only standard Microsoft formats available. Is this possible? If so, How?

Are you starting the endnotes directly at the end of the section or forcing
them to a new page?
