hyperlink to template is opened instead of new document
In a Word Document I have a hyperlink to a template.
The Template is opened instead of a new document. I Followed Article ID : 278627 Last Review : September 8, 2005 Revision : 2.0 Would someone setup the same Scenario and verify that this can be done. If it can I need directions. The shortcut resolves to that actual template even if i type in the shortcut path and shortcut name. |

You need a hyperlink to a desktop shortcut or Mac alias, not to the
template. A hyperlink to a template opens the template. The problem: "In a Word Document I have a hyperlink to a template." has a
similar problem as "In a web Browser". The on-line assistance directed me to Q278627. This solution will not work for a word document hyperlink running Windows XP. I am looking for a solution where the individual is not a web designer but a €śWord user€ť. Renaming the shortcut extension to €ś.doc or .lnk€ť will open a new document with d-click in the windows explorer but when called from a Word hyperlink I get the error message €śCannot open the specified file.€ť Can anyone direct me to a solution? Yes, the solution does work. However, you need to:
1) actually create a desktop shortcut (link) to the template - you can't just change the name in the hyperlink, there has to be an actual shortcut file 2) create the link to the shortcut, not to the file. This has to be done manually. I am sending a shortcut to the desktop. For the hyperlink file name and location; I manually entering "C:\Documents and Settings\...\Desktop\shortcut to file.dot" the extension was only changed because "dot" does not work. I use it regularly.
Your link cannot be to the .dot file, but to the lnk file. There actually has to be a .lnk file. So, for instance, I had a shortcut to the file "MyTools.dot" The real name of the shortcut, which I do not see, is MyTools.dot.lnk. The link is to that file. You cannot insert this link by using Insert Hyperlink. So Edit hyperlink is not what you are using and does not work. You are copy-pasting the shortcut or drag and dropping it into the document. This process adds a package object with a €śdocument icon€ť in the word document. It changes the shortcut name from €śMyTools.dot€ť to a link name €śMyTools.dot.lnk€ť in the document. You then double click on the icon and it opens a new document. Great! The problem is... I prefer a hyperlink look with a single click. How can I get the Hyperlink to work? I do use edit Hyperlink; I change the link to be to the actual shortcut
file, not the template. Sorry I can't be more clear about this. Just stating a solution without trying a mockup does not prove evidence of
your argument. I stand behind my word that from a MS Word document a hyperlink to a shortcut to a template cannot open a new document. Its obvious you are using this Discussion group as bait for financial gain. Opinions are not facts and should not be given on this discussion board. Again I state my situation for anyone else: I have a word document with a hyperlink to a template. It is obvious the hyperlink will open the template and not create a new document. Due to the large number of documents and templates files I would like to know the easiest way (little or no code) to have the hyperlink create a new document. However, you need to: 1) actually create a desktop shortcut (link) to the template - you can't just change the name in the hyperlink, there has to be an actual shortcut file 2) create the link to the shortcut, not to the file. This has to be done manually. This is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy old but Im bored and having this issue, in that I've created the shortcut link and the hyperlink to the shortcut works (Not without warning me first about security issues) but still opens it as .dot rather than .doc. And yes, I entered it manually. |
