[Vertical split]

Every time I open a new Word document, I get a vertical splut on the left of
the screen. I go to Windows, and click on Remove split. How to preveny it
appearing? Have I done some setting that makes it appear? The split contains
views of the other pages in the document.

it sounds like it is set to view/thumbnails.
You can check by clicking on "View". The current settings will be in a box,
with the background shaded.
