Default Problem with backspace in Word

When I highlight a set of words and try to delete it by hitting backspace it
doens't do anything. The only way i can effectively erase highlighted words
is by hitting delete. Even when i try to highlight text and then replace it
with some other text by hitting a key while the text is highlighted, nothing
happens. It only takes away the highlight and puts my blinking "I" to the
beginning of the highlighted text.
