Default recover older word files

I have a word file that must have come from the previous version of Word. I
am currently using Office 2003 for Students and Teachers. No matter what I
try I can't get anything but gibberish.
1. I tried open and repair
2. I tried recover text from any file.

All I get is this:

Ý6F¶ÊöŽ 7ÜËÕhç)^~s©Çm¾øxó *#¦
û¹G*öÕl&ã; »± c,9ÛwÜâÆï&ÇÔ EÔ&*W˪é\Æ+l Ügì\
¡F2d!õ³Ñw叩ŽÙS òC $,'

Anyone having any ideas as wto what else to try would be greatly apreciated.
