Default Insert file into Word 2003 inserts text instead of icon

Using XP/Office 03, I'm attempting to insert multiple files, .doc or
otherwise, into an existing .doc . Instead of inserting an icon for the
file, Word inserts all the text. One workaround I have found is to drag and
drop the file, select the textbox, right click and choose 'Document
ObjectConvert...Convert toWord Document, select 'display as an icon'
button. This displays the icon but not with the appropriate filename. This
method does not seem to work in tables or with other file types such as .pdf,
..xls etc.

Can I change the filename displayed for the Word icon and is there
another/better and less complicated way of inserting files into Word.

Thanks

I'm not sure why you want to insert an icon and not the text (which is what
insert file does), but would inserting a hyperlink to the file(s) not be more
appropriate?

I'm not very familiar with using hyperlinks in this fashion but my concerns
are that the hyperlink would not be available to everyone who gets the
document. the icon would point to an internal document which would be
unavailable to all recipients. If they click on the icon I want the file to
open. If there is a way to attach files and create a hyperlink to them I am
unaware of the process.

Thanks

If you chose Insert | Object and then Create from File you can insert a file
and choose display as an icon. Don't know if this is suitable for your
situation.
