Default two copies of document open automatically - one real one fake?

Whenever I open a word document it creates another document in the same
folder - the new document says 0 kilobytes. I would like to turn this off
as I spend all kinds of time eraseing these empty files.

Thanks for your help.

These are almost certainly Word's working temporary files. You obviously
have Explorer set to display hidden files. You only need to remove them if
they are left behind when Word is closed as Word should remove them itself
if working correctly.
