Default Word files saved on my iMac are not recognized by PC's

I've been getting messages back from friends that tell me Word files saved on
my iMac and attached to e-mails cannot be opened by their PC's. The files
saved on the iMac have a .docx extension. Do I have to "Save As" with a .doc
extension?

It may not be a Mac vs PC thing but a docx vs doc thing.

what version of Word are you having there exactly?

If MacWord works in the same way as Word 2007 (in this regard), then
it's either you saving the files in *.doc or the recipient installing
the Office Compatibility pack which can be found he

Robert:

Thanks for replying. My wife and I just got iMacs and have installed Office
for Mac 2008. We have been experimenting and found that if we save the files
as Word 97 files, other people can read them. The Mac saves the files as
*.docx. Apparently only Mac's can read that type of file.

..docx is the new format, readable by Office 2007 and apparently Office for
Mac 2008.
