That will hide them. You can list and delete them through Insert |
Bookmarks, if you want to.

Bookmarks and comments serve entirely different purposes. Some bookmarks are
inserted by Word (when you create a TOC, cross-reference, etc.), but they
are hidden, so you'll never see the brackets for those.

Strange as I don't really use bookmarks, I like 'comments' much better
for my needs. So don't know how they got there to begin with!
