Default x bar, y bar, etc.

How can characters like x bar (i.e., an "x" with a "-" over the top) be typed
in WORD? Such figures are commonly used to represent averages, etc., and I
frequently need them in my work. WORD, of course, handles underline,
strike-through, and italics, but not this.
