Default wise counsel regarding re-paginating & spell/grammar checks

hi all,

wxp pro sp2, office 2003 sp2,

i am in the process of finishing a documents 700+ pages all told now. two
things beginning to happen of late that i think i am right to be worried
about and seek advice from you all experts/experience users.

1. very frequently, and i am talking at least once every couple of minutes
my document would grind to a halt while a message of word repaginating appear
at the bottom left corner of word 2003's windows. from googling and searching
this site, i know this is bad news esp. when i tried the usual remedy of
htm'ing and reconvert to word .doc did not work (a sing of corrupted
document). the other remedy of copying paragraph by paragraph to a new
document has not been tried yet. i have to decide whether i am so near to the
end that i should put up with it.

my question is aside from the time penalty, if i persisted using this
document what could happen?

2. i keep getting very frequent pop-ups of spelling and grammar unable to be
completed because there were too many of them. there aren't many. many of
these are technical terms, expressions. is there a way to switch
spelling/grammar check temporarily off for this document? or is this another
sign of a corrupt document?

thank you for your advice/help.

jes
