I want to reference a numbered item by its own number, not the page or the
paragraph number, e.g. I want to reference to a Figure number in the text,
and be able to update in the text when other figures are inserted. Only page
and paragraph numbers are given as options.

I also cannot display the reference type as a Figure, although I used
TFigures to create the figures numbered system. I have to use numbered item.

Bookmark the number, then insert a reference to the bookmark.

If you use the Caption feature to caption the figures, you could insert a
cross-reference to the figure label and number.

And Word would automatically update the Figure number as you inserted more
captions. You have to select all and hit F9 to update the cross-references,
as well.

I don't understand your last paragraph.
