Default Page sizing and controls corrupted

Sometime last week, probably while editing a web page using MS Word, it reset
or corrupted the page sizing. Indications are no top margin (although page
setup says 1.25"); page size says 8x5 x 11; but the aspect ratio of the page,
and the ruler on the left show the page length as 9 inches; there are no
margin controls on the left edge ruler; and web pages edited now are out of
sync, wider than the viewable area, so you have to scroll to the right to
center the page.
I have tried saving a new normal.dot; automatic repair of Office; reinstall
Office; ununstall and again reinstall Office; all without affect, which makes
me suspect there is a config file somewhere doing this. Suggestions welcome.
Thanks

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | check the "White space
between pages" box | OK.
