Default Headers and Footers

Word 2002

There is a Page Setup option in Headers and Footers and a box that you can
check for 'Different first page'

I want the Header in the first page to be larger size and bolder, and all
subsequent pages to have the same info but smaller type and light grey
colour.

How do you use the 'Different first page' option to do that?

Thank you

You will have to set up each one separately from the sizing/format point of
view, though you can do a copy and paste to save having to re-enter the
data.

If you check the Different first page option and then go into the
Headers/Footers area, you will see that you have options for First Page
Header followed by Headers. You will need to uncheck the Same as Previous
option (on the Header and Footer toolbar) which will allow you to have
different Headers.

Thanks

I've managed half what I wanted to do.

The bit I'm still stuck on is that I cannot change the colours from the
First page to the others.

Basically I want to repeat the first page header on all other pages, but
with smaller type (which I have managed) but also with the letters of a
different colour (say, blue on the first and grey on the others)

This last bit I cannot do.

Thank you

Peter

Do you know how to change colors in the main text? It should be the
same--select the letter in the regular header and use Format | Font or the
text color icon on the formatting toolbar.

It is not necessary to unlink the headers. If there is only one section,
they are not linked to anything anyway. Headers are linked only like to
like: First Page Header to First Page Header, Header to Header. If the
Header were linked to the First Page Header, there wouldn't be much point in
the "Different first page" setting!

When you check the box for "Different first page," you get two entirely
separate headers, the First Page Header and the Header (you will need to
have at least two pages in your document to see this). Create the text you
want in the First Page Header, then copy/paste it into the Header (or vice
versa). Make the required changes in font size and color.

Thank you Suzanne

....but that's the whole problem That is exactly what I did, but I wanted
normal black for the fiirst page and grey for the rest.

When I look at the first page header before closing it is black, but as soon
as I close the Header and Footer both first page and subsequent pages take
the grey colour and the fist page heade is no longer black.

Something is obviously wrong but I can't see what.

Thanks

When you close the header/footer, the header/footer text will appear to
be gray in Print Layout view, but it should print correctly.

Text and graphics in headers and footers are always dimmed when you are
working in the document body (and vice versa). To see how the document will
look when printed, see Print Preview (though I have known that view to show
headers incorrectly as well).

As well as the correct answer to the 'grey' look given by G-n-O and Suzanne,
also make sure that under the Header Style you do not have the Automatically
Update checkbox ticked. But I expect that they are on the ball here.
