Default Format problem

When I change font, bold etc, fontsize, and some other format options for a
selected portin of the text of a document, my entire document changes format.
When i press cmd-z, the document is correctly formatted. I have tried to
replace the pref file for Word and for the entire Office 2004 suite with no
success.

Anyone out there able to shed light on this problem and a solution short of
reinstalling Word? Thank you
