deleting footnotes
In the course of editing my document, the reference marker for a footnote was
removed, but the footnote text still appears, with the deleted number. I don't want it but can't remove it as there is no reference marker to delete. What can I do? |

Try View | Header and Footer and delete the text there. I hope this has been
helpful to you. "SR" wrote: In the course of editing my document, the reference marker for a footnote was removed, but the footnote text still appears, with the deleted number. I don't want it but can't remove it as there is no reference marker to delete. What can I do? |

That's *not* gonna work, because View Header and Footer will *not* show
footnote text. You would need to use View | Footnotes to try that. Are you Tracking Changes, by any chance? If so, what do you have under Show on the reviewing toolbar? Are you sure the reference number was deleted? What if you View | Footnotes, and doubleclick the number in the note? Does it jump you back to a point in the text? What if you put the cursor a little bit before the reference number you deleted, and use Edit | Go To Footnote? Does it find anything there? What version of Word is this, anyhow? Was the doc originally created in Word? On 9/6/05 6:01 AM, "Carol" wrote: Try View | Header and Footer and delete the text there. I hope this has been helpful to you. Thanks for the prompt replies. Unfortunately I'm not Tracking Changes. When I
doubleclick the number or use Go To Footnote, it goes to the reference marker for the previous footnote (no.47 - 48 is the missing one). The reference numbers go from 47 to 49, and note 48 is still present with no reference number. Actually I think I've fudged it for now by recasting the text to keep the footnote and inserting the number manually, but I still don't understand why it happened. Sorry to be so thick! It's Word 2002, but it's part of the Works package that came with a new computer using Windows XP. Possibly there is a hidden footnote reference mark. Do you have nonprinting
characters (including Hidden text) displayed? -- Suzanne S.
