Word's editor does not identify the need for a comma in compound and complex
sentences. This would only require that the editor scan for coordinating
conjunctions or subordinating conjunctions; then signal the writer that there
is a possibility for a need for a comma before the coordination conjunction
or after a phrase or clause that begins with a subordinating conjunction. My
students would really benefit from such a prompt.
