Default symbols changing when opening Word 2002 doc with Word 2003

I have Word 2003. When I open an old document saved in Word 2002, symbols
such as quotation marks, apostrophes, section, paragraph change automatically
to other symbols making the document non-sensical. Is there any way to
disable this feature? Any explanation why this happens and help is
appreciated. Thanks.

Was the document originally created in WordPerfect?

Yes the document was originally a wordperfect doc. It was converted to a Word
doc. Word 2002 opens it without problems with symbols. Word 2003, however,
makes the unwanted changes.

The symbols probably represent quotation marks, dashes, and the like from
the WP Typographic Symbols font, which is not installed on the computer on
which you are using Word 2003.

Will installing the WP typgraphic symbols font on my new computer (with Word
2003) fix the problem? Is the font available on-line, if so where? Thanks so
much for your help.

Here's a twist. Word 2003 opens the 2002 doc but says it contains an embedded
font. The opened document reflects the proper symbols. However, the doc
cannot be edited or saved as another doc. When I cut and paste into a new
document, the symbols come out wrong again.

You'd be much better off just replacing the symbols. If you send the
document to someone who doesn't have the WordPerfect font, you'll be back to
square one.
